It's All About Me!

Musings by Donna #45 Once in a Blue Moon

Do you follow the moon? I do. I love it – probably because where I live, under the shadow of New York City lights, the moon is the most dominant feature of the night sky. I look for it most nights and marvel at its size each time. I love the little sliver of moon. It is delicate and looks as though it’s hanging by a thread. I imagine reclining in its cradle watching the night world pass by below. As days pile upon days and the month marches on, I am awed as it changes shape from a quarter, a half, then a three-quarter moon before it shows its grand splendor as a full moon.

Last night, August 31, 2012, I was lucky enough to see the blue moon. No, it’s not really blue. I was hoping it would be. You’ve probably heard the saying “once in a blue moon” meaning something rarely happens. And that is true of the blue moon, too. When a full moon shows itself twice in one month – a rarity – then we call the second moon a blue moon. Last night the blue moon shone in all its grandeur. The blue moon is magical.

There is a movie starring Ben Gazzara and Rita Moreno, titled Blue Moon.  The song, Blue Moon, written in 1934 by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart has been sung by Billie Holiday, Elvis Presley, The Marcels, and most recently was featured in Broadway’s production of Grease. It has a hip-hop, be-bop sound that makes you want to strap on your dancing shoes.

If you missed last night’s blue moon, don’t worry, you can take a peek tonight. It won’t be the official “blue moon” but it will look very much like it did last night. If you find your sky obscured with clouds, you can enjoy my photo of the official “blue moon” of August 31, 2012.

And if you miss tonight’s moon – oh sadness! – you will have to wait until July 31st, 2015 for the next blue moon. Hope for clear skies and happy viewing.

I’d love to hear from you, so please post your thoughts in the comment section of my blog. Just look below in the tag section. You will see the link for COMMENTS.
