On School #26 Into the Holiday Spirit

Talk about getting into the holiday spirit … the Figurski Kiddles stepped out of their Whoville Village on Wednesday afternoon to join their friends in Mrs. C’s classroom. There they watched A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens on the BIG screen (Smartboard). Some pretty spooky spirits cavorted across the screen. There are the ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. The story tells of how stingy, grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge changes his attitude after being visited by the ghosts. Well … who wouldn’t change his attitude with a little help from some not-so-friendly looking ghosts.

The children are learning about different holidays that are celebrated at this time of year, Christmas, Chanukah, and Kwanza. Did you know that each of these holidays centers around light? During Chanukah people celebrate by lighting a menorah. This commemorates the rebuilding of the temple in days long ago. Chanukah is celebrated for eight nights. Kwanza lasts for seven days and starts on December 26th. It’s main goal is to strengthen African heritage. Candles are lit each night for this holiday too. For Christmas people string lights around a Christmas tree. They decorate the rooftops and windows of their houses, too, which makes a very colorful sight. With all this beautiful and sometimes colorful light surrounding us, it is easy to get into the holiday spirit.
